After the recent interesting post on Accelerated Solvent Extraction Study of Bone Marrow Fat in 3 Species (link to post), here’s another fascinating animal science research study involving piglets and our Accelerated Solvent Extraction system (Thermo Scientific Dionex 200 accelerated solvent extraction) for sample preparation.
By the way, did you know that China is the world’s largest consumer of pork, and China’s recent purchase of the largest pork producer in the United States has raised concerns about food safety? (Link to story.) The research in the study featured in this blog post was conducted by scientists from three Irish institutions: School of Agriculture and Food Science, University College Dublin, and Ashtown Food Research Centre; and, the researchers studied the possible researchers studied the possible anti-inflammatory action of two types of brown seaweeds on the colons of piglets infected with the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (link to Wikipedia page).
In the study, titled, Extracts of brown seaweeds can attenuate the bacterial lipopolysaccharide-induced pro-inflammatory response in the porcine colon ex vivo, (link to abstract; only the abstract is free), the researchers used extracts of two types of brown seaweeds: Ascophyllum nodosum andFucus serratus. They quote a previous study on the potential anti-inflammatory potential of brown seaweeds and state: “Brown seaweeds are a rich source of bioactive polysaccharides (laminarin, fucans, and alginic acids), polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, antioxidants, and secondary metabolites such as phlorotannin, which may have potential immunomodulatory activities.” (In case you are interested in viewing this referenced study, click its title here: Bioactive compounds in seaweed: functional food applications and legislation, [downloadable PDF].)
The researchers made the extracts of the seaweeds by first oven-drying the seaweed samples followed by using our automated accelerated solvent extraction system (Thermo Scientific Dionex ASE 200 system). The researchers write, “It is concluded that the extracts of AscophyllumandFucusseaweeds have potential to suppress the pro-inflammatory response induced by the bacterial LPS in the pig colon.”
