I am interested in doing drug assays on transdermal patches where the drug is dissolved in acrylic adhesive on the patch. Can the patches be cut to fit into an extraction cell?
Yes, you can cut the patches to fit them into the extraction cells. We have also done a lot of work with transdermal patches using the ASE technique. Application note 327, Extraction of Nitroglycerin from Transdermal Patches by Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE), (downloadable PDF) describes our work with a transdermal patch and describes how the total sample preparation time using the ASE technique was only 30 min per sample versus the 2 hours required by the sonication procedure (the standard extraction procedure for this type of a sample). In addition, you can avoid the use of solvents that are expensive, toxic, and require costly disposal.
