After featuring a couple of blog posts on using GC-MS/MS to catch sports doping cheaters and a guide for sample prep and analysis of drugs of abuse using GC-MS, I am really pleased to present a new liquid chromatography (LC) column (Thermo Scientific Accucore C8 HPLC column) which provides super-fast run times and excellent peak shape response for low levels of testosterone in blood, urine, and sera!
Testosterone is an important steroid hormone, and is found in mammals and most vertebrates. The hormone is responsible for many aspects of male health, its levels need to be monitored in testosterone-deficient males to observe the effects of hormone replacement therapy, and its analogs have shown up in many athletic doping scandals (Wikipedia page). Just recently, at the same time the story that green tea could mask testosterone doping was widely reported, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said that it will add regular checks of blood steroids to its biological passports!
The new column is presented in Application Note: LC-MS/MS Method for the Determination of Testosterone using an Accucore C8 HPLC Column (downloadable PDF), which describes the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis of testosterone using the new LC column demonstrating extremely fast, high-response separation with a cycle time of less than 1.5 minutes while maintaining excellent peak shape. This column will significantly increase sample throughput and is an ideal screening column!
