sample preparation fat extractionI don’t know about you but studies such as the one blogged here fascinate me and draw me into the extent that here I am blogging this particular one on using our accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) technique in diagnosing starvation in domestic animals. This is done by studying the bone marrow fat in the femur or other long bone of the animal postmortem since this fat is the last to deplete in situations of starvation. By the way, it turns out, as mentioned in the study discussed here, bone marrow from the femur of the leg has been used in diagnosing starvation in wild ruminants, snowshoe hares, and deer.

In this study, published in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, and titled, The Effect of Environmental Storage Conditions on Bone Marrow Fat Determination in Three Species, (link to full free PDF) researchers from the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health, Michigan State University, United States, wanted to develop a method for the determination of starvation in domestic species, such as horses, cows, and dogs, and to see if storage conditions had any impact on the bone marrow of domestic species.

The researchers took bone marrow samples from the humerus and femur bones of horses, cows, and dogs within 24 hours of death of the animals, and stored them 30-60 days at three different storage conditions (refrigeration, freezing, and summer ambient). The fat was extracted using our Accelerated Solvent Extractor system (Thermo Dionex ASE 200 system). The advantages of ASE include automated extraction of up to 24 samples, speed (faster than Soxhlet and sonication), and the use of significantly less solvent.

The researchers found that the “bovine and equine percentage of fat in bone marrow does not change after 30–60 days, regardless of the storage condition, whereas the fat content from canine tissues varies when stored at ambient temperatures.” This study would be a useful application in veterinary forensic medicine.
