We all hear about biodiesel, it is one of those sources of energy that has a lot of interest. Now, being that I love science some of the cool things with this source of energy are; it’s renewable, it can be produced from several different starting materials, and it can be used in current diesel engine technology when blended (I do know there are necessary modifications for older diesel engines). Gas chromatography comes in by the need to test the product for certain contaminants that could cause excessive wear on the engines or cause more pollution. There are a few methods for the GC around the world. Some of the most prominent are from USA and Europe, ASTM D6584, EN14103, EN14105, EN14110. The webinar focuses on work done on ASTM D6584 and EN14105. These particular gas chromatography methods provide the ability to analyze for free and total glycerin in B-100 biodiesel.

Setting-up a laboratory for the comprehensive characterization of biodiesel samples by gas chromatography represents a serious capital investment.
