pretreatment of contaminated samples before analysisHere, I am pleased to feature automated,effective, and affordable methods for the sample pretreatment of contaminated samples before ion chromatography analysis resulting in the benefits of long column life and highly reproducible analytical results. Typically, official monitoring methods, such as ISO 5667-3 and U.S. EPA Method 314.1 require filtration of samples at or immediately after sample collection for sample stabilization.

Technical Note 144, Inline Filtration for Ion Chromatography, (downloadable PDF), describes two sample filtration approaches that can be used for different types of samples, low or high contamination levels, and a small or large number of samples:

  • Method One uses our autosampler (Thermo Scientific Dionex AS-DV Autosampler) with dedicated vials and individual filter caps. THis approach works for a wide range of samples, including those which are heavily loaded with particulates.
  • Method Two uses inline high-pressure filters for low-to-moderate contaminated samples.

For the method development, one of our ion chromatography systems equipped with an auxiliary 10-port sample preparation valve was used to prepare and analyze samples. The auxiliary valve mounted two inline filter cartridges and was also connected to a secondary, high pressure pump which was used to backwash the filter cartridges.

Note that any of our integrated ion chromatography systems (Thermo Scientific Dionex ICS-1100 Basic Integrated IC system, Dionex ICS-1600 Standard Integrated IC system or the Dionex ICS-2100 Integrated RFIC system, are designed to be easily equipped with an integrated auxiliary valve. Our modular, high-pressure ion chromatography system (Thermo Scientific Dionex ICS-5000+ HPIC system) can also be setup in this way.
